Understanding Communication Between Costa Rica and Japan
This week's class focused on intercultural communication and nonverbal communication. I learned that communication is not only about words. Facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, body language, and even silence can communicate important messages. In intercultural situations, understanding these nonverbal signals is essential because people from different cultures may interpret them differently.
According to Cherry (2024), body language includes facial expressions, gestures, posture, eye gaze, and body movements, and these signals should be understood in context.
One interesting difference is eye contact. In Costa Rica, maintaining eye contact can show confidence and interest. In Japan, excessive eye contact may sometimes be perceived as uncomfortable or overly intense. Silence is another example. Many Costa Ricans may feel uncomfortable during long pauses in conversation, while in Japan silence can demonstrate respect, reflection, or careful consideration.
Despite these differences, both cultures value politeness, kindness, and positive relationships. Nonverbal communication plays an important role in showing respect and building trust in both countries. Learning about these similarities and differences helps us become better intercultural communicators and avoid misunderstanding.
